Shabbat School

Shabbat School – Saturdays from 9:45 am to 12:00 pm
Hebrew & Religious School – 1st grade through 5th grades
Our Hebrew and religious school students meet twice a month in person at the Unitarian church and twice a month on Zoom from 9:45 AM to noon. The students attend a Shabbat morning prayer service every Saturday morning we have either in-person or virtual class. In our Hebrew and religious school program, our students work on their Hebrew reading and work to build a milon (a Hebrew dictionary). Students begin to learn our liturgy (the Shabbat morning service) and the meaning behind the prayers. Our Judaica unit covers the history and holidays of our tradition. We also focus on Jewish values like Gimilut hasadim (acts of loving kindness), rachamim (compassion), and hakarat hatov (gratitude), to name a few.
B’nai Mitzvah preparation – 6th and 7th grades
This class meets both on Saturday mornings (9:45 AM to noon whether in-person or virtual) and Tuesday afternoons from 4:00 to 5:15 PM, always on Zoom.
As our students prepare for becoming B’nai Mitzvah, they work on leadership roles. The students lead our weekly prayer service and work to understand both the ancient and the modern meanings of the prayers in our siddur. The Judaica component focuses on life-cycle events, Jewish genealogy and Holocaust studies. All of our students participate in our “twinning program” where they work with our resident docent of the Holocaust Museum, Gary Levin, to tell the story of a child who never was able to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. In addition to the students working together, they meet with Arava for private tutorials to learn their Torah portions and to work on their B’nai Mitzvah writings.
